Dark Intentions”. This year’s theme sheds light on the tobacco industry’s tactics to lure women and young people into addiction through flavored and colorful products. Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death globally, with the World Health Organization (WHO) Eastern Mediterranean Region bearing a significant burden. The Region has the highest smoking rates among adolescent boys, with countries like Jordan, Lebanon and Egypt ranking among the highest globally. The promotion of new nicotine products, such as e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products, has led to higher dependency rates among vulnerable groups. Globally, 37 million children aged 13–15 years use tobacco. In the Eastern Mediterranean Region smoking rates in some areas have reached 43% among adolescent boys (aged 13–15 years) and 20% among adolescent girls. The highest prevalence of tobacco use among boys is recorded in the occupied Palestinian territory (West Bank) at 43.3%, followed by Jordan at 33.9% and the Syrian Arab Republic at 31.6%. The tobacco industry’s promotion of new nicotine products, such as e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products, is particularly concerning. These products often feature flavors and colorful designs that attract women and young people, leading to higher dependency rates. With over 16 000 flavors of e-cigarettes available, it’s no surprise that in some countries 9 out of 10 e-cigarette users are drawn to the flavored products that target younger users. Alarmingly, the gap in tobacco use between men and women is narrowing, with more women and girls taking up smoking, exposing them to health risks such as cervical cancer, osteoporosis and fertility issues. Meanwhile, the Region already has the highest smoking rates among adolescent boys, underscoring the urgent need for action. “Our Region has the highest youth smoking rates in the world. We must act to protect the next generation. Let us stand together and make it crystal clear. No more tricks. No more traps. Let’s unite for a tobacco-free future.” says WHO Regional Director Dr Hanan Balkhy. In response to the alarming rise in tobacco use among women and adolescents, the Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean has launched a targeted initiative. This initiative recognizes that women and adolescents share common vulnerabilities, including socioeconomic factors and health care needs that make them susceptible to the industry’s tactics. Governments, stakeholders and communities must work together to: ban tobacco product flavors and attractive designs; implement graphic health warnings on packaging; restrict advertising and promotion; and increase taxes on tobacco products. “We need to work with all stakeholders, led by governments, to limit/ban the use of flavours and attractive colourful designs, especially for emerging products including, but not limited to, e-cigarettes and vapes. Let us unite for a tobacco-free future. We owe it to our children, our communities and our future generations to take bold action against the tobacco industry’s tactics, Dr Balkhy says. Let’s spread the word and unite for a tobacco-free future!  اليوم العالمي للامتناع عن التبغ لعام 2025: كشف حقيقة جاذبية منتجات التبغ 29 أيار/ مايو 2025، القاهرة، مصر – يحتفل العالم في 31 أيار/ مايو باليوم العالمي للامتناع عن التبغ لعام 2025 تحت شعار “فضح زيف المغريات”. ويسلط موضوع هذا العام الضوء على أساليب دوائر صناعة التبغ لإغراء النساء والشباب للوقوع في براثن الإدمان من خلال منتجات مُنَكَّهة ومُلوَّنة. ويُعدُّ تعاطي التبغ السبب الرئيسي للوفاة الذي يمكن تلافيه على الصعيد العالمي، ويتحمل إقليم منظمة الصحة العالمية لشرق المتوسط عبئًا ثقيلًا في هذا الصدد. ويسجِّل الإقليم أعلى معدلات التدخين بين المراهقين، إذ أن بلدان مثل الأردن ولبنان ومصر مُصنَّفَة ضمن البلدان ذات أعلى المعدلات لهذه الظاهرة على الصعيد العالمي. وقد أدى الترويج لمنتجات النيكوتين الجديدة، مثل السجائر الإلكترونية ومنتجات التبغ المُسَخَّن، إلى ارتفاع معدلات إدمانها بين الفئات القابلة للتأثُّر. وعلى الصعيد العالمي، يوجد 37 مليون طفل تتراوح أعمارهم بين 13 و15 عامًا يتعاطون التبغ. وفي إقليم شرق المتوسط، وصلت معدلات التدخين في بعض المناطق إلى 43% بين المراهقين (الذين تتراوح أعمارهم بين 13 و15 عامًا) و20% بين المراهقات. ويُسَجَّل أعلى معدل انتشار لتعاطي التبغ بين الفتيان في الأرض الفلسطينية المحتلة (الضفة الغربية) بنسبة 43.3%، يليها الأردن بنسبة 33.9% والجمهورية العربية السورية بنسبة 31.6%. ومما يثير القلق بوجه خاص ترويج دوائر صناعة التبغ لمنتجات نيكوتين جديدة، مثل السجائر الإلكترونية ومنتجات التبغ المُسخّنة. وكثيرًا ما تتميز هذه المنتجات بنكهات وتصاميم ملونة تجذب النساء والشباب، وهو ما يؤدي إلى ارتفاع معدلات إدمان هذه المنتجات. ومع توافر أكثر من 16000 نكهة من السجائر الإلكترونية، فليس من المستغرب أن ينجذب 9 من كل 10 من مستخدمي السجائر الإلكترونية في بعض البلدان إلى المنتجات المُنَكَّهة التي تستهدف المستخدمين الأصغر سنًا. ومما يبعث على القلق أن الفجوة في تعاطي التبغ بين الرجال والنساء آخذةٌ في التضاؤل، حيث يشرع عدد أكبر من النساء والفتيات في التدخين، وهو ما يعرضهن لمخاطر صحية مثل سرطان عنق الرحم وهشاشة العظام ومشكلات الخصوبة. وفي الوقت نفسه، يسجل الإقليم بالفعل أعلى معدلات التدخين بين المراهقين، وهذا يؤكد الحاجة الماسة إلى اتخاذ إجراءات في هذا الشأن. وتقول الدكتورة حنان حسن بلخي، المديرة الإقليمية لمنظمة الصحة العالمية: ”إقليمنا يسجل أعلى معدلات التدخين في صفوف الشباب عالميًّا. مما يستدعي تدخلًا عاجلًا لحماية الأجيال القادمة. فلنقف صفًّا واحدًا، ونعلنها بصوت واضح وحازم: لا مزيد من الحِيَل. لا مزيد من الخداع. لنتحد معًا من أجل بناء مستقبل خالٍ من التبغ ومخاطره. “ واستجابة للارتفاع المفزع في تعاطي التبغ بين النساء والمراهقين، أطلق المكتب الإقليمي مبادرة موجَّهَة. وتُدرك هذه المبادرة أن النساء والمراهقات يشتركن في نقاط ضعف مشتركة، منها العوامل الاجتماعية الاقتصادية واحتياجات الرعاية الصحية التي تجعلهن عرضة للتأثر بأساليب هذه الصناعة. ويجب على الحكومات والأطراف المعنية والمجتمعات المحلية العمل معًا من أجل: حظر نكهات منتجات التبغ والتصميمات الجذابة؛ وضع تحذيرات صحية مصورة على عبوات منتجات التبغ؛ تقييد الإعلان عن التبغ والترويج له؛ زيادة فرض الضرائب على منتجات التبغ. وقالت الدكتورة حنان بلخي: “نحن بحاجة إلى العمل مع جميع الأطراف المعنية، بقيادة الحكومات، للحد من استخدام النكهات والتصميمات الملونة الجذابة أو حظرها، لا سيّما المنتجات المستجدة، ومنها على سبيل المثال لا الحصر السجائر الإلكترونية وسجائر البخار الإلكترونية (الڤيب). فلنتحد معًا من أجل بناء مستقبلٍ خالٍ من التبغ ومخاطره. فأطفالنا ومجتمعاتنا وأجيالنا المقبلة تستحق أن نتخذ إجراءات جريئة ضد أساليب دوائر صناعة التبغ.” وفي اليوم العالمي للامتناع عن التبغ لعام 2025، دعونا نرفع مستوى الوعي بالنوايا السوداء لدوائر صناعة التبغ ونعمل من أجل مستقبلٍ خالٍ من التبغ. معًا، يمكننا أن نصنع فَرقًا وأن نحمي صحة مجتمعاتنا وعافيتها. دعونا ننشر الوعي ونتحد من أجل مستقبلٍ خالٍ من التبغ! |
