The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Sudan’s efforts to achieve food security through the application of nuclear technologies.
In a speech delivered at the opening ceremony of Sudan’s pavilion at the IAEA General Conference, Dr. Najat Mokhtar, IAEA Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications, praised the strong cooperation between Sudan and the IAEA. She highlighted successful projects such as the development of high-yielding, climate-resilient varieties of wheat, maize, groundnuts, bananas, and tomatoes.
Dr. Mokhtar emphasized the IAEA’s ongoing commitment to meeting Sudan’s needs, including capacity building and technical cooperation to support the country’s food security goals. She also commended Sudan’s initiative to establish a “Friends of Food Security” group in Vienna.
In a pre-recorded message, Sudan’s Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Dr. Abu Bakr Omar Al-Bashri, expressed gratitude for the long-standing and fruitful partnership between Sudan and the IAEA in areas such as crop improvement, animal health and productivity, land and water management, food safety, and pest control. He expressed hope for further strengthening cooperation through the “Atoms for Food” initiative, launched last year to address food security challenges.
Al-Bashri highlighted Sudan’s unique geographical location, fertile land, and diverse climate, which make it well-suited to leverage nuclear technologies to enhance agricultural productivity, ensure food safety, and effectively manage natural resources. He emphasized that these efforts would contribute to achieving food security in Sudan and the surrounding African and Arab regions.
Sudan’s pavilion at the 68th session of the IAEA General Conference, which runs until Friday, was organized in cooperation with the Sudan Atomic Energy Commission and Sudan’s Permanent Mission to the IAEA. The conference features a scientific forum on the “Atoms for Food” initiative, aimed at promoting the use of nuclear technologies in food security-related areas.
