*Letter: Time to call out RSF and its sponsors for Sudan’s war*

The opinion piece by the former Sudanese prime minister Abdalla Hamdok (“There is no military solution in Sudan”, April 9) borders on justifying the war and absolving the culprits of genocide and the unprecedented atrocities still going on.
The writer conveniently blames the war — an abstract notion — instead of the local and external actors who wage it. He further contradicts himself by attributing the cause of the war, which he acknowledges was not inevitable, to “decades of exclusion, economic disparity and institutional decay”.
This is an echo of the newly discovered justification by the Janjaweed paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for its war against the people and national state of Sudan. Since the failure of its bloody coup attempt that included a plot to assassinate the president, the commander-in-chief of the Sudanese armed forces (SAF), on April 15, 2023, RSF has been giving ever-changing justifications for waging and continuing the war, from being provoked by SAF, its role as “third party” dislodging the ousted regime, to dismantling the 1956 post-independence dispensation creating Sudan. Lately it had resorted to opportunistically borrowing the rhetoric from the very armed struggle movements used by the ousted regime, namely, ending marginalisation and disparity. It is interesting that such a claim is made by a parochial tribal militia, led by a single household with incredible ill-gotten wealth and power, and innocents’ blood on their hands, to appropriate the entire state order. It is even more perplexing that an ostensible leader of a civilian group is buying it. However, such logic is currently used by the militia to attack certain Sudanese regions and communities because “they are the privileged ones”, and the RSF found an advocate for its misdeeds in the person of the writer.
The article fails to recognise what has become clearly evident — that RSF is fighting a proxy war on behalf of its regional sponsor, the United Arab Emirates, greedy to control Sudan, its natural resources, its very important geostrategic location and long Red Sea coast, while satisfying its leadership’s thirst for more power.
There were gruesome discoveries after Khartoum’s liberation of dozens of secret centres of detention and torture administered by RSF, as well as mass graves of thousands of civilian victims, during nearly two years of its control of the capital city, resembling the scenes following the fall of Assad family rule in Syria. The Dagalos — and Hemeti himself, the leader of RSF — have outdone the Assads in this respect, as their achievements in two years are comparable to the latter’s in half a century!
As in the case of Isis, al-Shabaab, Boko Haram and the like, a military defeat of the savage terrorists is a prerequisite for any political solution. This requires a principled and united international position against this terrorist group that shall compel the regional sponsor of the criminal militia to stop its sinister fuelling of the war.
It is high time those who claim to be civilian leaders had the courage and integrity to call them out. The Sudanese people deserve justice for the crimes committed, and the sponsors of the RSF militia should not escape accountability.

المقال الافتتاحي لرئيس الوزراء السوداني الأسبق عبد الله حمدوك (“لا يوجد حل عسكري في السودان”، 9 أبريل) يقترب من تبرير الحرب وتبرئة مرتكبي الإبادة الجماعية والفظائع غير المسبوقة التي لا تزال مستمرة.
يُلقي الكاتب اللوم بسهولة على الحرب – وهي فكرة مجردة – بدلاً من الجهات الفاعلة المحلية والخارجية التي تشنها. كما أنه يناقض نفسه من خلال إرجاع سبب الحرب، التي يقر بأنها لم تكن حتمية، إلى “عقود من الإقصاء والتفاوت الاقتصادي والتدهور المؤسسي”.

كما هو الحال مع داعش والشباب وبوكو حرام وأمثالها، فإن الهزيمة العسكرية للإرهابيين المتوحشين هي شرط أساسي لأي حل سياسي. وهذا يتطلب موقفًا دوليًا مبدئيًا وموحدًا ضد هذه الجماعة الإرهابية يجبر الراعي الإقليمي للميليشيا الإجرامية على وقف تأجيجه الخبيث للحرب.
لقد آن الأوان لأولئك الذين يدعون أنهم قادة مدنيون أن يتحلوا بالشجاعة والنزاهة لفضحهم. يستحق الشعب السوداني العدالة عن الجرائم المرتكبة، ولا ينبغي أن يفلت رعاة ميليشيا الدعم السريع من المساءلة.
